No Time to Lose campaign: new solar radiation research and resources launch

As part of the next phase in the No Time to Lose campaign, IOSH launched new research and resources on solar radiation exposure on 23 April 2015 at the Royal Mail Group head office, in London.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world, and sun exposure is the main cause of it. People who work outside are at much greater risk than indoor workers – they are exposed to up to 90 per cent more ultraviolet radiation. Our campaign aims to get sun exposure issues more widely understood and help businesses take action to better protect their workers.

At the event IOSH launched new research into solar radiation and malignant melanoma in outdoor workers from Imperial College London, and new research into sun safety awareness in the UK construction industry from Nottingham University; a good practice case study based on Royal Mail Group’s new sun safety strategy; and free practical, industry-focused resources to help businesses tackle solar radiation risks.

The launch brought together senior stakeholders from across industry to highlight the scale of the issue, share experiences of managing the risks, and showcase IOSH’s new free resources which have been designed to be used as part of an effective safety and health management programme.
